Leakage in Roots Coronally Sealed with Different Temporary Fillings. Barthel et al. JOE 1999 Vol 25, No.11 731-734

100 teeth obturated with laterally compacted gutta percha with AH26 sealer and restored with either: Cavit, IRM, Ketac Fil, or combination layers of IRM and Ketac Fil. Tested for bacterial leakage using S.mutans.

Results: Mean time for leakage was 4.5 days for the Cavit group, 4.0 days for IRM, 2.0 days for Ketac Fil, 3.9 days for the Cavit/KF, and 9.0 days for the IRM/KF groups.

Conclusion: “From this study, it may be concluded that S. mutans bacteria seem to be capable of easily bypassing temporary filing and root filling to the periapex. It may be recommended that definitive restorations should be placed as soon as possible after obturation of root canals.”
